Abstract

My thesis project is entitled Crossing borders: The brushstroke of a modernist Portuguese painter. This project suggests an interdisciplinary strategy to the investigation of the art-works of Amadeo de Souza-Cardoso. Two different approaches to the study of painting techniques will be implemented and compared: (i) a characterisation of the materials by micro and in-situ spectroscopy techniques (microEDXRF, microDXR, microFTIR, FORS and Raman), and (ii) an image computer analysis of the brushstroke. My PhD work is part of the project “Crossing borders – History, materials and techniques of Portuguese painters from 1850-1918 (Romanticism, Naturalism and Modernism)”, supported by the Fundação para a Ciência e Tecnologia (FCT).
