In the Summer, Fall and Winter of 2002 several workshops on photographic preservation and collection management will be organised. In Amsterdam (October 2002), Rochester (August 2002), Melbourne/Canberra (2002-2004), Edinburgh (December 2002) and the San Fransisco Museum of Modern Art (November 2002).

SEPIA Workshop on management of photographic collections (organised by ECPA)

Topics
The nature of photography: history of photography, identification of photographic materials and techniques, forms of deterioration
Preservation: preventive measures, environmental issues, storage, packaging, handling, effect on life span; duplication: analogue or digital; financial and managerial aspects of preservation
Digital imaging: planning a digitization project, goals, selection criteria, technical specifications, scanning, color management, image enhancement yes or no? quality control; scanning and preservation, management of digital assets: long-term access to digital archives, descriptions and metadata
Collection management: photographic collections and institutions, users' requirements, defining preservation policies, storing and displaying photographs, digitization as one option in collection management
Case study: participants will work in small groups on a project combining digitization and preservation aspects. key words: planning, assessment, defining goals and priorities, workplan, budgeting, staffing
Who should attend?
All those responsible for photographic collections in archives, museums, libraries. For this introductory course, no specific expertise of photographic techniques or digital imaging is required. Participants are expected to have a working knowledge of English in order to participate in discussions.

Workshops on photographic conservation

Location: Australian Institute for the Conservation of Cultural Materials (AICCM) Photon
The Australian Institute for the Conservation of Cultural Materials (AICCM) photographic special interest group PHOTON is pleased to announce a series of four Photographic Conservation Workshops
sponsored by the Getty Grant Program. The workshops will be presented by recognised international experts in the field and will cover topics such as passive preservation, identification of materials and processes, advanced treatments and duplication.
Eligible participants will be able to credit the workshops towards a postgraduate qualification from the University of Canberra. The intensive week long workshop series will be held at venues in Canberra and Melbourne, Australia, starting in July 2002 and finishing in July 2004.

Course on photography and glass
Date: November 5, 2002
Location: National Archives of Scotland, Edinburgh
"Photography and Glass" is a course is for conservators. The number of participants is restricted to ten.
The aim of the course is to enable participants to identify glass-based photographic processes and learn about associated structures of cased photographs and photographs in passe-partout.
Participants will also learn suitable ways of treating these processes and structures.
The processes covered will be wet collodion negatives, gelatin glass plate negatives, wet collodion positives, autochromes, lantern slides and opaltypes. Daguerreotypes and wet collodion positives
will be covered with respect to cases and passe-partout.
The first day of the course will cover historical and scientific theory and the second day will enable the participants to develop practical experience in the appropriate conservation techniques. The practical teaching will include repairing broken glass negatives and making facsimile decorative cover glasses.
