Contemporary art courses during the curriculum
BA Contemporary art conservation is a 3-week course as part of the 3rd academic year of the Bachelor at the Department for Pictorial Art at the School of Conservation, Copenhagen.
Focussing on establishing an understanding of contemporary art forms and the consequent challenges for conservation, the content being a survey of premises for avant-garde art in the 20th and 21st Centuries and for its preservation with presentations of select isms and conservation case stories. The background being prior courses on documentation techniques, modern materials, polymer chemistry, preventive conservation, and preservation of cultural heritage.
MA Mandatory course: Preservation of complex and complicated objects
Complex problems and strategies concerning the preservation of cultural and natural heritage are presented and discussed. Theoretical models for decision making within the framework of preservation are examined and discussed. General knowledge about theory and methods concerning the preservation of complex objects or objects with complicated problems is gained. Further the ability to choose - and if necessary to modify - relevant decision making model and preservation strategy and the ability to critically evaluate the decision process and related treatment. Finally competences to take part in cross disciplinary decision making and communication of preservation strategy concerning conservation and restoration of complex and complicated objects.
Optional course: The Conservator as Curator
A seminar in March 2010 focussing on exhibition of material culture and issues of preservation. Participants prepare a 1-page (2200 units) paper on the basis of his/her thesis, suggesting an issue for exhibition. Learning outcomes are: knowledge about and ability to curate and communicate issues of conservation-restoration in a museological context.
Group work in cooperation between students from School of Conservation and Copenhagen University. Papers are presented and discussed. Prior to this seminar is a workshop as part of the course: Heritage Preservation II, The Biography of Things (description in the programme of this course).
